Diwali: Govardhan Puja 2026

Day 4: Govardhan Puja

This day is about gratitude and offerings to nature and God. It commemorates Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from a storm. Traditionally, large meals are prepared as offerings.

Fun Activities:

  • Create "gratitude plates" with drawings of things students are thankful for.

  • Collage activity representing nature and protection.

  • Make paper mountains or dioramas representing the Govardhan story.

  • The Govardhan Green Mission Challenge every class to take one action to protect nature: plant flowers, grow herbs, create a wildlife-friendly space or care for existing school plants.

  • Gratitude in Action: Share a Meal Organise a school food collection in partnership with a local food bank. Discuss food waste, food insecurity and why sharing food is an important expression of gratitude and community care.

  • Every Drop Counts Launch a water-saving challenge. Pupils identify ways to reduce water waste at school and home, design awareness posters and track the class's water-saving commitments

  • The Invisible Heroes Project Ask pupils to identify people who help their school community every day, including cleaners, catering staff, caretakers, office staff and lunchtime supervisors. Create thank-you cards or organise a gratitude appreciation board.

Whole-School Ideas:

  • “Gratitude Wall” where students post what they’re thankful for.

  • Share the story of Govardhan Hill through a visual retelling or video.

  • Serve or display Indian food/snacks during lunch with information on their significance.
