Transgender Awareness Month 2026

Transgender Awareness Month

Highlights the experiences and challenges of transgender individuals.

Activities:

  • Film screenings: Show documentaries about transgender lives.

  • Discussions: Facilitate conversations on gender identity. Look at keywords/phrases like 'cis’, ‘trans’, the difference between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’, ‘non-binary’.

  • Art projects: Create inclusive artwork.

  • Social Media: Share student artwork, posters, favourite books, TV shows, films and celebrities.

  • Dear Future Me: Students write a letter to their future selves reflecting on who they are and what kind of world they hope to live in.

  • The “Words Matter” campaign Create posters highlighting the importance of names, pronouns and respectful language.

  • The “Be the Reason Someone Feels Safe” wall Ask students to complete the sentence: “Our school feels safer when we…”

  • Transgender History Timeline Create a timeline exploring transgender history, achievements and contributions.

  • The “Walk in My Shoes” scenario activity Present fictional scenarios about everyday school experiences and ask students how they might respond.

    For example:

A student is repeatedly called the wrong name.

Someone hears a transphobic joke in the corridor.

A classmate shares something personal about another student without permission.

  • “Myth, Fact or Harmful Assumption?” quiz Run a tutor-time quiz that explores terminology, stereotypes and respectful behaviour.

  • The “Ally in Action” challenge Encourage students and staff to choose one practical action for the month.

    Examples:

    Challenge bullying safely.

    Use respectful language.

Listen to transgender people speaking about their own experiences.

Learn how to report discriminatory behaviour.

Check whether school resources are welcoming and inclusive.

  • “Voices That Deserve to Be Heard” assembly Build an assembly around real transgender voices, using age-appropriate interviews, short films or published first-person accounts.

Include a short introduction to terminology, a reflection on stereotypes and a practical message about kindness and anti-bullying.

  • “One Minute to Make a Difference” video series Create short social media videos featuring messages about respect, inclusion and challenging stereotypes.

  • The “30 Days of Inclusion” challenge Share one small action, reflection or learning point for each day of November.

Examples include learning a new term, reading a personal account, challenging a stereotype, recommending a book or practising a respectful response to bullying.

School-wide Awareness:

  • Host assemblies focusing on transgender history and rights.

  • Provide resources for transgender students.

  • Students and staff to wear blue, pink and white.

  • “You Are Not Alone” support information campaign Create a discreet, accessible display showing where students can find help if they experience bullying, feel isolated or need someone to talk to.

Include the school's safeguarding contacts, trusted staff members and appropriate youth support organisations.
